  • There’s this part in the Luck pilot, when these four guys are crowded around, watching a horse race on a TV. Near the end of the race, they’re like, “what’s happening?”, as it becomes clear that the horse they bet on won the race or something. That was the question I constantly asked as I watched the show, minus the interest they had for the answer and their passion for what was going on.
  • The only times I ever understood what the characters were talking about were when they casually tossed back ethnic slurs. Take that as you will.
  • Is there a valid reason why these “degenerate” characters are written as “casual” racists? This show takes place in a modern setting. How is it not problematic in an obviously racist and also classist way? Realistic? Fuck off. No, seriously, I want an answer to this. I’m not saying that the reality that racism exists should be ignored but it’s suspicious that if they’re going to add this kind of grittiness to the proceedings, that only the characters of the lower socioeconomic class participate in it.
  • I admittedly ignore the same thing in shows like Breaking Bad but I don’t know, I guess it just says more about the way I watch TV, that I’m willing to gloss over it when the racism is shrouded within better material. I could get more introspective about this but… ehhh, no.
