I am watching the Grammy Nominations Concert (look, there isn’t a new episode of Revenge tonight) and it’s not insulting enough that a band with the name Lady Antebellum exists in 2011, they had to show us the terrible irony of a black woman saying their name on national TV.

This is a problem one of David’s contributors, Ryan O’Connell, seems...
– So many shots fired. I’ve always thought of O’Connell’s writing as being based on his own experiences for better or worse (mostly worse, rite guys) so what Chris Ott is saying up there is new to me. Also, Choire as collateral damage, oof.
tmills asked: Had I known you then and had you posited the question "should I fly to Vancouver to see Will Oldham play for three nights?" my answer would have been (and would still be) a resounding yes.

Re: T.I. being a homophobic asshole.
Yeah, I was pretty upset that Vibe gave him a platform to spout his vile, uninformed thoughts on how hate speech is free speech (and also his vile, uninformed conspiracy theories but that ranks a bit lower than hate speech IMO) but then I looked at the sidebar to the right and their third most-read story is about whether Drake’s new album is “too-emo” for men because, you know,...
Is there a bigger embodiment of white guilt than...
What an aggravating human being.
(Note: When I say “white guilt”, I don’t mean to say that “white pride” is preferable, of course not, but I’m talking about the “white guilt” that manifests itself in his fetishization of some sort of “authentic” black experience that’s found only in his head. If there’s a better term for the...

So yesterday, I watched part of an episode of Dr. Drew’s Lifechangers (that’s a show that exists that I have now watched to some extent) that featured a panel of experts on various topics - so think Oprah’s experts, but probably even less qualified to dole out advice on what they supposedly know about - answering audience questions. One of the panelists was a veterinarian....

Insert post here about how if it was another band other than Fugazi that got on the NYT front page, the level of unbearable outrage there would be, and what that says about us, how myopic we are, etc.

what about the ones about tents being ok in mall parking lots but not ok in “occupied” parks? i think those are more about capitalist critiques than anything else

That feeling when you don’t know if the Black Friday jokes (at least the ones unrelated to the pepper spray incident) about how those stupid poors are going to injure themselves have a whiff (so yeah, no pun intended) of casual classism to them or if you’re just being overly sensitive as the internet has trained you to call out everything for the slightest hint of offense but you do...
I'm watching Hugo by myself.
In addition to the sadness inherent in being at a family movie by yourself in the middle of the day, there is only one other person in the theater, which makes it better or worse, I can’t decide.
On one hand, no children, and at a family movie, that’s always a plus.
On the other hand, the fact that there’s actually just no one here except that guy behind me just makes it all...

Local festivals and hip-hop.
Oh my god. Another local festival has booked Kid Koala as a headliner. If you guys are going to pander cater to the hip-hop community, could you stop being so goddamn safe, book someone who’s maybe even the slightest bit relevant, and stop making local festivals look like they’re having some competition to see who can book that guy the most?
Look, I was a “booking...
Jesus, internet.
Could you guys maybe for once just let people react to events, whether they be seismic or tiny things like some show maybe being cancelled, without voicing your opinion that you’re above it all and just let it run its course?

This winter season, for every photo you post of your cat, I will post five photos of the thick layer of snow outside my house.
My mind is circling back repeatedly to this one conversation I had in Toronto. It was small, the relative of mine probably already has no memory of it, knowing she has a newborn baby to raise, and me, I should probably have forgotten about it by now. I can’t get it out of my mind so I’ll blog about it! Yes, that’ll ease my mind! So somehow, she had gotten wind that I was going to...

Today's reasons to unfollow someone.
They think the fake Ghostface blog is funny.
They think the fake Ghostface blog isn’t sexist and encourages retrograde gender roles, an already-existing problem in rap.
They think the fake Ghostface blog is actually written by Ghostface.

Things I've learned tonight.
Sarcasm doesn’t work unless you have something to say other than “ur wrong”. If that’s all that you’re basically saying, find another mode of expression. When you’re sarcastic but have nothing to say, what ends up usually happening is that you’re spitting what the other person is saying back at him/her without adding anything new so you’re wasting...

I'm home.
I don’t know if it’s because I’m a huge nerd or really cheap (shut up, it can’t be both) but the first thing I did after I left the airport was to go to the library to return a book that I brought along for the trip(s) that’s due today.
